Title: The nation's choice for the 12th President of the U.S. Genl. Z. Taylor and his battles
Creator(s): Baillie, James S., fl. 1838-1855, lithographer
Date Created/Published: [New York] : Lith. & pub. by J. Baillie, 87 St. near 3d Avenue, N.Y., c1847.
Summary: A campaign print for Whig presidential nominee Zachary Taylor. A bust-length portrait of the Mexican War hero is set in an oval frame of oak leaves and acorns, surrounded by various martial attributes. Cannon, drums, bayonets, and flags flank the portrait, a sword and musket are crossed below, and an eagle with a shield and sprig of olive or laurel sits on top. In the corners are scenes of the general's major Mexican War victories (clockwise from upper left): Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma, Buena Vista, and Monterey. The print was apparently issued long before Taylor was officially a candidate. Taylor was named the Whig presidential nominee at the party's national convention in June 1848.
