Inscribed upper left: Weldon Depot Washington St. Jarretts hotel. Inscribed vertically left margin: Hotel is a dark color. Most of the crowd white people. Inscribed vertically above image as indicator: Baptist; Catholic; on the cars 'Great Southern Express & Adams Express Co. No. 13 & 3'.
Inscribed on verso: The crowd of people in the square are waiting to get into the provost Marshals office and to take the oath; a proceeding which carries with it the priviledges of opening stores for trade of rations from the commissary, liberty of mail communication with the north, etc. The hotel is already in operation under the superintendence of Mr. Platt, formerly Quartermaster of the Sixth Corps, who has taken it and intends it shall be a first class house. It will do a great business in accommodating the numerous visitors who already begin to flock here to see the great siege works of the two armies.
