Title: [Waiting for Huerta]
Creator(s): Powers, Thomas E., 1870-1939, artist
Date Created/Published: 1913 Nov. 11 [publication date]
Summary: Three losers of the 'Down & Out Club' await the deposed dictator's arrival in the desert at the border of the U.S. and Mexico. Standing atop a horsedrawn coach with shattered windows labeled 'Free Bus to the Down & Out Club,' and peering through a telescope, Sultan Mehmed V, a former ruler of Turkey, spots a figure running towards them in the distance. Beside him stands former Venezuelan leader Cipriano Castro. At the rear of the coach, Dr. Frederick Albert Cook, who contested Robert E. Peary's claim that he discovered the North Pole, stands. In the distance, a small figure (presumably Huerta), is running away from a cloud of black smoke labeled 'Revolution in Mexico.'

Victoriano Huerta assumed the provisional presidency of Mexico on February 18, 1913, following the overthrow of Francisco Madero. Fearful of being opposed, he suppressed his critics, sometimes by violent means, and ultimately abolished the legislature. Facing pressure by revolutionaries and rejection for President Woodrow Wilson who refused to recognize his government, he fled, first to Spain and later to the United States.
