Established in 1849 with an initial donation of 10 acres by John Sutter, the famous local entrepreneur on whose land, up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, on which gold was first discovered in California. Today, the City Cemetery is comprised of more than 31 acres and includes a historic Gold Rush-era Rose Garden, a perennial-plants area, and several acres that highlight native plants.
