At this site, Kennan had 'the most pleasant and successful picnic that [he] ever had the good fortune to enjoy'. Accompanied by his hosts, the chief administrative officer of the southern Altai district and his wife and daughter, the Cossack Ataman and his wife, and a political prisoner with his wife, Kennan dined on soup, freshly caught fish, roast lamb, boiled mutton, cold chicken, pilaf with raisins, strawberries and confectionary.
