Summary: Cartoon shows Uncle Sam as a sick man seated in a chair. One bandaged hand is labeled 'Cost of Living;' another 'Prohibition.' A bandaged foot is labeled 'Strikes, Bolshevism,' and a bandage on his head, 'Taxes.' His arm rests on a crutch labeled 'Congress,' and he is soaking a foot in a tub labeled 'Treaty Complications.' Smoke from the fireplace is labed 'Soft Coal Deadlock.' Medicine and pills are labeled 'Wilson's Capsules' and 'Lodge's Dope.' A newspaper on the floor is dated 'Thanksgiving Day, 1919.' The cartoonist reflects on the social and political ills (in particular the fight over the ratification of the Treaty of Versailles) besetting the country after the end of the first World War. Harding drew for the Brooklyn Eagle for 21 years, winning two Pulitzer Prizes.
