Title: The triumph of America
Date Created/Published: [1766 August]
Summary: Print shows William Pitt, the first Earl of Chatham, driving a triumphal carriage in which rides a Native American representing America. The carriage is drawn by a team of six horses, 'Royal Oak, Crafty, Weathercock, Surly, Prudence, [and] Prerogative', representing the members of Pitt's new ministry, the Duke of Grafton, Charles Townshend, the Earl of Shelburne, H.S. Conway, Robert Henley (Earl of Northington), and Lord Camden. The carriage is headed down a steep slope toward an abyss into which Britannia has already fallen. Though guided by a Native American as the postilion, the horses balk at proceeding further.
