The political drama. No. 17. State witches laying a spell over the country

Print shows five witches flying on a single broom over a rural landscape. The witch at the front of the broom represents Prime Minister Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey; followed by Henry Peter Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux; John Charles Spencer, Viscount Althorp; Queen Adelaide carrying a German sausage; and comic character Billy Lackaday, from James Kenney's play, Sweethearts & Wives. The print includes two spells being cast on the nation by the witches: "Harum Scarum, cockalorum, the Q---n, Althorp, Broom and Grey, with silly Billy Lackaday, turn round three times and away" and "Hoblum, Goblum, we imps of hell Fixes o'er this hopeless Isle a spell; There let it be thro' years of woe, Descend ye mists, blind all below, All social bonds henceforth asunder, That we may promise, deceive, and plunder."Below the witches a farmer says "Oh Lord ha' mercy on us, there they be again riding in the air and laying their Whiggish spells o'er the country as usual, vor these three long years have they been bewitching us, not content with blasting our harvests, hurling upon us showers of Taxation, stagnation, and damnation, but they be about I suppose to wind it all up with the spell of Starvation." The print refers to the Reform Act of 1832.
