The house huntings of Hubert-Hardluck,1890-1920,F Opper
Title: The house huntings of Hubert No. 3 / F. Opper.
Creator(s): Opper, Frederick Burr, 1857-1937, artist
Date Created/Published: [between 1890 and 1910]
Summary: Single-panel comic strip shows a fat man (labeled 'Snow Trust') demanding rent from Hubert-Hardluck, a small man (labeled 'The Common People'), standing in the door of his igloo. The igloo sports a chimney, curtains, and an igloo doghouse for the dog. Hubert threatens to report him to the Housing Commission which 'might pass a resolution next summer saying it ain't right.' The fat man laughs, 'Har, Har! All those investigators are jokes. Come across with yer rent.' The rise of unfettered capitalism at the turn of the century inspired considerable criticism of the role of business monopolies known as trusts. Conflict between the trusts and ordinary people was a favorite Opper subject.
Notes:
Caption: Our friend Hubert-Hardluck having heard that the Esquimaux live in snow huts called 'igloos' waits for a good snow fall and builds a nice little igloo for himself and family with parlor, bedroom and bath. Aw, what's the use? Just as they got settled he found that the snow belonged to the Snow Trust and he had to pay rent! To be continued.
