Oscar S. Teale (1848-1934) served as both secretary and president of the Society of American Magicians (SAM). He specialized in 'phenomenal magic' and worked for Houdini as a psychical researcher. When one of these photographs appeared in Houdini's book 'A magician among the spirits' it bore the following caption: 'Houdini, Mrs. Houdini, and Mr. Teale demonstrate a method of switching slates over a sitter's head.'
