Title: The hook for 1912
Creator(s): Powers, Thomas E., 1870-1939, artist
Date Created/Published: 1912 Dec. 31 [publication date]
Summary: The male figure, Gloom, and the androgenous figure, Joy, perform on a stage. Joy, dressed as a ballerina and labeled '1913,' enters stage left, dancing. At the same time, a huge hook removes the scraggly, bearded Gloom outfitted in tattered clothing labeled with the year '1912' from the stage. Gloom's clothing reflects the scandals and corruption rampant in the outgoing year including: war, the high cost of living, bribery, trusts, poverty, Theodore Roosevelt and divorce. A group of 'Joy' figures play in the orchestra, conducted by a winged, bearded figure of Father Time.
