The governor's palace Williamsburg,Virginia,Stone Wall,Elizabeth Verner,1936

Title: The governor's palace Williamsburg
Creator(s): Verner, Elizabeth O'Neill, 1883-1979, artist
Date Created/Published: [1936]
Summary: Drawing shows the governor's palace rising above a stone wall. Three people in colonial dress stand before the wall or at the gate. The Governor's Palace was completed in 1722, after 16 years of fitful building. It served as the focus of the city's fashionable society and finest entertainments. Colonial Williamsburg purchased the property in 1928. Nearly two years of work uncovered the original footings, the cellars, debris from the fire, and a section of original wall. A reconstruction of the original buildings began in 1930 and opened on April 23, 1934. Verner was commissioned to draw Williamsburg by the Rockefellers in 1936.
