The image refers to the campaign slogan, 'A Full Dinner Pail,' first used by President William McKinley in his 1896 bid for the presidency, to promote his promise of prosperity for all. The slogan was used again by Republican candidates in the 1900, 1904, and 1908 presidential elections. In the 1912 election, the Democrats adopted the slogan in an effort to contrast the 'Full Dinner Pail' with the housewife's 'Empty Market Basket,' caused by Republican incumbent Taft's tariffs on many neccessities.
