Completed in 1921 to serve as the meeting place for the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, the building was designed by George Bigelow Rogers, a local Mobile architect who also designed the Bellingrath Home and the Mobile Public Library. The Scottish Rite Temple is the only intact example of the Egyptian Revival style that remains in the city. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Placeson January 5, 1984. This is one of two sphinxes right outside of the Egyptian shaped building.
