Middleton, of Harlan County, as he was questioned by the Senate Civil Liberties Committee in regard to the weath he acquired since becoming sheriff in 1934. He admitted his wealth had increased $102,728 since taking over the job of sheriff three years ago. His new holdings included stock in coal mines, an $18,000 farm, a $25,000 business building, and coal lands. during this time he reaceived less than $5,000 per year salary, 4/26/1937
