Summary: German documentary photographs made on the Ernst Schäfer expedition to Tibet. Palace of the Dalai Lama in Lhasa, street market in Lhasa, two boats made of stretched yak-hide being transported overland, a holy lama blessing a young woman, portrait of the Dalai Lama, etc.
Notes:
Typewritten captions in English mounted on slips mounted on cards for 22 of the prints. One print has handwritten caption in German.
List of photographs annotated with negative numbers in Ref File in LOT laid in.
Ink stamp on verso of 12 mounts: 'Nachdrucksrecht Copyright Schäferexpedition München 22, Widenmayerstrasse 35/III'.
Accompanied by handwritten letter in German dated Graz, May 26, 1943 and postcard dated Graz, July 25, 1943 signed by Elsa Laura von Wolzogen. Also includes small photograph of Tibetan amulet. Handwritten caption on this photograph indicates that it is a picture of an amulet given to von Wolzogen by Sven Hedin from his travels in Tibet.
