Accompanied by cream colored sheet inscribed: Making approaches to the enemies works under cover of the sap roller. The sap roller was a mass of basket work about 6 ft. in diameter and 9 ft. in length affording cover to a few men at the head of the sap, or trench, which was dug at an angle to the hostile rifle pits. A guard sometimes accompanied the sappers to protect them against sudden attack.
