Title: Early knitting machine brought out to show stocking manufacture in 1840. Washington, D.C., Feb. 9. Robert Lawson, lecturing today at the Commerce Department, demonstrated the basic model for making stockings for milady in 1840. The model has been enlarged and improved upon, but is fundamentally the same machine. His lecture upon the art of knitting was made through the cooperation of the Textile Division of the Patent Office, 2-9-39
