In 1949, George L. Andrews, former district attorney of Tioga County, New York, discovered forty-four plates in his Owego barn, wrapped in Washington, D.C. newspapers of 1866 and 1874. His mother had acquired the glass plate negatives from the widow of Andrew Burgess, a gunsmith who bought out one of Brady's Washington studios. Andrews sold the plates to the Ansco Division of General Aniline & Film Corporation (GAF), Binghamton, New York, the country's oldest photographic manufacturer. Ansco and its predecessor, Edward Anthony & Co. had supplied Brady with the bulk of the materials. Prints were made by Ansco from glass plate negatives formerly the property of Mathew B. Brady.
