Biographical note: Herbert Putnam was Librarian of Congress from 1899 to 1939. The Manuscript Division holds his papers, which span the years 1793-1958 and number 8,000 items. They are accompanied by a finding aid. These materials, which were a gift of Brenda Putnam and Mrs. Eliot O'Hara, 1956-63, include family diaries, speeches, articles, scrapbooks, genealogical material, and an autograph collection. Putnam's papers relate not only to his position as Librarian of Congress but also to his work as director of the Boston Public Library. The main body of Putnam's archive as Librarian of Congress is in the Library of Congress Archive (Central File) in the Manuscript Division.
