Biographical note: John Caldwell Calhoun (1781-1850) was vice president of the United States, secretary of state, secretary of war, and U.S. senator from South Carolina. His collection in the Manuscript Division (67 items) spans the years 1819-1850 and was acquired through gift and purchase, 1901-1956. The photographs were transferred to the Prints and Photographs Division.
