Biographical note: The papers of Chester Alan Arthur (1829-1886), president of the United States, 1881-1885, are held in the Manuscript Division. Numbering 4,400 items, the papers span the years 1843-1960 and contain correspondence, financial documents, scrapbooks, clippings, and miscellany, dating chiefly from 1870-1888. A finding aid to the papers was published in 1961. The photographs were transferred to the Prints and Photographs Division.
