Today, seventy years after the death of Houdini, The Society of American Magicians and The International Brotherhood of Magicians are the leading organizations, headquartered in the United States, for professional conjurers. These associations exist within an international context that includes, for example, the Association Francaise des Artistes Prestidigitateurs, the All India Magic Circle, England's Magic Circle, Circulo Mexicano Ilusionistas, and Japan's Nihon Kijutsu Kai. Magicians from throughout the world gather every three years at the event that most closely resembles an Olympics of magic the competitions of the International Federation of Magic. Known by its French acronym FISM, the Federation awards first, second, and third prizes in six stage and two close-up (cards, coins, cups and balls, etc.) categories. FISM's overall Grand Prix denotes a world champion of magic.
The Society of American Magicians is the oldest of these organizations. It was founded in 1902, in the backroom of Martinka's Magic Shop on Sixth Avenue in New York City. Houdini joined the Society in 1904, was elected an honorary member in 1912, and President in 1917 and succeeding years. In 1917, Houdini also bought Martinka's Magic Shop where it all began.
