Photo of Gravestone,Grave,Jean-Eugene Robert-Houdin,French Master Performer

Title: [Grave of Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin]
Date Created/Published: [between 1871 and 1930]
Notes:
French master performer, inventor, and writer of seminal works on conjuring Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin (1805-1871) is considered the 'Father of Modern Magic.' The son of a clock maker, he had expected to follow in his father's craft, but Robert-Houdin's ability to see the beauty and challenge of the art of magic was too strong and his love of the unexpected and astonishing far too great. Utilizing his extensive knowledge of watches and larger mechanisms, he created fascinating automata and lighter, less cumbersome props than those used before. He relegated to the closet the traditional costume of the wizard complete with peaked hat and brought an elegance to magic that transformed it into an entertainment of the stage suitable for evening dress. Robert-Houdin also perfected the powerful deception of second-sight, presenting an act in which his young son identified objects while blindfolded.
In 'Conjuring and magic,' Robert-Houdin affirmed that 'The art of conjuring bases its deceptions upon manual dexterity, mental subtleties, and the surprising results which are produced by the sciences.' For this man vastly ahead of his time the most relevant areas of the sciences were mechanics, electricity, and magnetism.
But the heart of magic was the wizard. 'The most indispensable requirement for the successful practice of magic,' wrote Robert-Houdin, 'is a great neatness of manipulation combined with special mental acuteness.' And magic was acting, it was theatre. The magician, stated Robert-Houdin, should be an actor playing the role of a magician.
