Photo of Fly-leaf & 1st Page,Bible of Rabbi Samuel Weiss,1892,Harry Houdini Dad
Title: [Fly-leaf and first page of the Bible of Rabbi Samuel Weiss]
Date Created/Published: 1892.
Notes:
Depicted here are the first pages from the Bible of Houdini's father, Rabbi Samuel Weiss. Included is his business card. Bibliographically the book may be described as follows: Bible. German. 1892. Die Bible, oder Die ganze Heilige Schrift des Alten und Neuen Testaments. New York: Amerikanische Bibel-gesellschaft, 1892. Emotionally these pages resonate with deep familial ties. They document an early address and attest to the resolve of Rabbi Weiss to seek religious employment.
In his dedication to 'The unmasking of Robert Houdin' Houdini wrote, with some exaggeration, 'This book is affectionately dedicated to the memory of my father, Rev. M. S. Weiss, Ph.D., LL.D., who instilled in me love of study and patience in research.' Here, on the fly-leaf of the Bible, Houdini provides an exceptional autograph. He establishes the relationship of the book to Rabbi Mayer Samuel Weiss and the relationship of Rabbi Weiss to Houdini. Then he provides a signature with his name as son Ehrich Weiss.
It was not long after the birth of Ehrich on March 24, 1874, that Mayer Samuel Weiss moved his family from Budapest, Hungary, to Appleton, Wisconsin. There he became rabbi to a congregation that met at 117 E. College Avenue. On June 6, 1882, Rabbi Weiss became a United States citizen. His life was strongly marked by the struggle to provide for his family. The background and experience of Mayer Samuel Weiss are explored in Weltman, Manny. 'Houdini, escape into legend: The early years, 1862-1900' (Van Nuys, CA: Finders/Seekers Enterprises, c1993).
