Title: The trial of Vall
Date Created/Published: [ca. 1863]
Summary: Cartoon drawing in three scenes shows the trial and aftermath of Clement L. Vallandigham, a former Congressman and a Copperhead or peace Democrat, who in 1863 was arrested and tried on charges of treason relating to a speech he made while campaigning for governor of Ohio in May 1863. He had spoken against Lincoln's war policy. In scene one, Vallandigham, seated before the judge in military court, General R.R. Potter, demands a jury trial. Samuel S. Cox testifies for Vallandigham in the second scene while George H. Pendleton goes after George Pugh. In the third scene Vallandigham is dragged off to Tortugas with a chain around his neck while Pendleton chases George Pugh, candidate for lieutenant governor, warning him that 'No 38 is coming.' General Ambrose E. Burnside commanded the military district that included Ohio. Fed up with widespread 'copperhead' sentiment in the area, Burnside issued 'General Order, No. 38.' Vallandigham's sentence was commuted to exile in the Confederacy. Escorted to North Carolina, he turned and went to live out the remainder of the Civil War in Canada. Candidate for lieutenant governor George Pugh represented Vallandigham's views at rallies and in the press.
