Summary: Original sketches of Whistler's standing butterfly device, matted by the Library with reproductions of the devices. DRWG/MA, no. 267a (front) shows butterfly, apparently flying, with long tail ending in arrowhead point; no. 267a (back) shows butterfly bent forward, short tail with arrowhead point, and three pentimenti of long squiggly tail covered over with white. (DRWG/MA, no. 267b is a small-size reproduction on its own sheet). DRWG/MA, no. 268 shows standing butterfly with reproduction of slightly different butterfly pasted onto the same sheet. DRWG/MA, no. 269a shows butterfly sketched against half black and half white background divided diagonally. (DRWG/MA, no. 269b is a small-size reproduction on its own sheet.) DRWG/MA, no. 270a (front) shows butterfly, apparently flying with long tail ending in arrowhead point trailing down. DRWG/MA, no. 270a (back) shows butterfly bent forward with diamond-patterned wings, the sketch crossed out in ink. (DRWG/MA, no. 270b is a small-size reproduction.).
