Title: [Thimble theatre]. 'Something the matter' / Segar.
Creator(s): Segar, E. C. (Elzie Crisler), 1894-1938, artist
Date Created/Published: c1921.
Summary: Five panel comic strip shows Olive Oyl telling her dismayed sweetheart Ham Gravy that she plans to 'sell kisses at the charity bazaar to-night.' At the bazaar, Olive waits in vain for a customer, not realizing that Ham Gravy is standing behind her booth with club in hand, holding a sign reading 'Keep Away from My Sweety.' This is an early cartoon from the strip Thimble theatre, originated by Segar in 1919. Ten years later, Segar introduced Popeye the Sailor as a passing character. Popeye was such a success that he replaced Ham Gravy as Olive Oyl's love interest, and Ham faded from the strip. The strip was eventually renamed for Popeye.
