Caption on item: On the iron steps of this building, then the the Eastern Bank of Alabama, at Eufaula, a group of ignorant Negroes, led by a carpetbagger, plotted the sacking of the town. Overheard by a black faithful to the whites, the plan was disclosed and the riot subdued before it began.
