Title: The mysterious stranger / McCutcheon.
Creator(s): McCutcheon, John T. (John Tinney), 1870-1949, artist
Date Created/Published: 1904 Nov. 10 [publication date]
Summary: Editorial cartoon shows a long line of men representing states in the 'Republican Column.' Opposite them in the 'Democratic Column,' stands one man in a black coat and broad-brimmed hat, labeled 'Solid South.' Footprints lead from the Democratic Column to the Republican Column, where another man (labeled 'Missouri'), also in a black coat and hat, stands at the head of the column. In the presidential election of 1904, Missouri broke ranks with the Southern States for the first time since Reconstruction and voted Republican. Theodore Roosevelt easily defeated Alton Parker. McCutcheon, a world-famous traveler, war correspondent, and editorial cartoonist, drew for the Chicago Tribune from 1903 to 1946.
