Summary: Six-panel comic strip shows tall lanky Mutt and tiny Jeff in a railroad car. Mutt is sitting on the floor in a dog costume and Mutt tells him to put on the head since the conductor is coming. When the conductor rules that all dogs must ride in the baggage car, Mutt emerges from his costume in a rage. The last panel shows the two being kicked off the train with Jeff commenting, 'I hope I die if Mutt lives.' Mutt and Jeff was one of the earliest daily comic strips. It began appearing in 1907 featuring Mutt, but Jeff was added in 1908. The strip was wildly popular, and Bud Fisher, who had had the forethought to copyright the title and concept, became so wealthy that by the end of World War I, he had turned over most of the work to his assistants. The strip continued under various artists until 1982.
