Site History. House Architecture: Built by James Madison circa 1760, with changes by C.A. Perkins, builders from Hollyoak, Delaware, for William duPont, 1900-1901; changes by George Finklen until 1917. Landscape: Restored and changed by William duPont after acquiring Montpelier in 1900. John Simms and his son John 'Jack' Simms Jr., gardeners and Paul Oglesby [or Oglesby Paul], 1901-1913. Associated name: Annie Rogers Zinn [Mrs. William] du Pont. Other: Marion du Pont Scott, after the death of parents in the 1920s, commissioned Charles Freeman Gillette for continued changes. Today: A property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
