Summary: The Liberty Bell, set on a pedestal, is flanked on the left by a southern plantation owner standing underneath a palm tree, and on the right, by a northern gentleman standing under a pine tree. Behind the plantation owner stands an African American with his hat held before his face. He looks over the plantation owner's shoulder, smiling.

On January 23, 1885, the Liberty Bell, venerable symbol of American independence and freedom, was sent to New Orleans, Louisiana for display at the World's Industrial and Cotton Exposition. It returned to Philadelphia on June 17, 1885, ten days prior to the publication of Nast's cartoon.
