Summary: Design drawing executed not later than September 1782 by Esprit-Antoine Gibelin shows Minerva (representing France) standing, leaning forward, holding a spear in raised right hand and a shield, with a fleur-de-lis design, in her left hand, preventing a lioness (representing Great Britain) from attacking Hercules who is astride a cradle at Minerva's feet and holding a snake in each hand (representing the victories over General Bougoyne at the Battle of Saratoga '17 Octobre '77' and General Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown '19 Octobre '81').
Notes:
Benjamin Franklin collaborated in the design of the medal in Paris.
