Note on verso: Fired - Career diplomat John Paton Davies poses in Washing Nov. 5 after he was fired by Secretary of State John Foster Dulles on the ground that his continued employment would go against the interests of national security. The 46-year-old Davies, controversial figure for a decade, was called from his post as counselor of the J.S. Embassy in Lima, Peru, to be told of Dulles' decision. Dulles said he acted on basis of a unanimous finding by a five member special security hearing board.
