Summary: Design drawing for engraving by J.C. Buttre shows two scenes: Battle in the Shenandoah Valley under Genl. Fr mont Cross Keys, and Pike's Peak, surrounding head-and-shoulders stipple engraving portrait of John C. Fr mont (1813-1890). Fr mont became a national icon known as 'Pathfinder' in his explorations of the Far West, including topographical research in the Pike's Peak region of Colorado in 1842. In March 1862 he was named head of the army's new Mountain Division in West Virgina. Fr mont lost the Battle of Cross Keys against Confederate general Stonewall Jackson, but succeeded in driving him from the Shenandoah Valley. He resigned from the military shortly afterward. This portrait shows him in military uniform and may have been created during the Civil War or during his brief nomination for president in 1864.
