In 'A magician among the spirits,' Houdini stressed the importance of Ira Erastus Davenport (1839-1911) and his brother William Henry Davenport (1841-1877) in the history of mediumistic manifestations. With them, Houdini stated, these occurrences 'became complicated exhibitions involving the use of a cabinet, rope tricks, bells, and various horns and musical instruments.' During part of the Davenport Brothers' joint career, their senior assistant was William Marion Fay (1839-1921).
