Title: Historic buildings on Commerce Street, Montgomery, Alabama
Creator(s): Highsmith, Carol M., 1946-, photographer
Date Created/Published: 2010 February 20.
Notes:
Commerce Street, once the heart of Montgomery's business district leads from the Alabama River to center of the city. In the early days commercial buildings and residences lined the street. By the 1880s merchants had built elaborate warehouses and the area became the principal wholesale district for Central Alabama. Changes in transportation and marketing brought a decline to the area. In the 1970s revitalization began with restoration of the old buildings.
