His attempt at suicide,Thomas Nast,1860-1890
Title: His attempt at suicide, - not due to remorse but J.J. / Th. Nast.
Creator(s): Nast, Thomas, 1840-1902, artist
Date Created/Published: [between 1860 and 1890]
Summary: Single panel illustration shows a distraught and disheveled man, gazing out a darkened window. He appears to be having hallucinations: a ghostly skeleton hovers at his shoulder holding a razor, a gas lamp bears a skeletal face, and snakes slither out of his boots and over his feet. Nast was a pioneering cartoonist in the 19th century. He drew for Harper's Magazine for more than 25 years, and his cartoons are credited for doing much to discredit the infamous New York Tweed Ring. This drawing is possibly an illustration for a book or a story.
