Harry Houdini performs the East Indian needle threading trick,c1915,Orpheum
Title: [Houdini performs the East Indian needle threading trick]
Date Created/Published: [ca. 1915]
Notes:
The front page of 'The Orpheum circuit news' of November 14, 1915, featured a cropped version of this photograph. The image served as a reminder that Houdini the celebrated escape artist was also Houdini the master magician a performer who could create wonder and mystery with such common items as needles and thread. The article that accompanied the photograph was titled 'Houdini master showman, known as 'Elusive American' is the rage.' Houdini, stated the text, gave '... a wonderful performance, elaborate and complete.' The progression of Houdini the magician as actor, climbing the rungs of the vaudeville stage from oblivion to the top of the Orpheum Circuit, was then projected in financial terms. He was depicted as having escaped from poverty into wealth: 'Houdini is rated as the richest vaudeville performer in the world, being worth easily more than a million. Fifteen years ago he was a dime museum performer in Chicago, doing fourteen shows a day for thirty dollars a week.'
