Ching Ling Foo who proclaimed himself Court Conjurer to the Empress of China, was born in Peking, China in 1854 and died ca. 1922. A superb showman, he performed with great success in the United States, South Africa, and Europe. Included in the presentations of Ching Ling Foo were the production of an enormous bowl of water and the conjuring up of a young Chinese girl. The visual excitement of Ching Ling Foo's routines made Oriental magic so popular that the American magician of Scottish-English descent William Ellsworth Robinson (1861-1918) disguised himself as Chinese. Thus transformed, Robinson, beginning in 1900, regenerated his career becoming highly successful as Chung Ling Soo.
