Harry Houdini at grave of John Henry Anderson,Wizard of North,Aberdeen,Scotland
Title: [Houdini at the grave of John Henry Anderson, Wizard of the North, Aberdeen, Scotland]
Date Created/Published: 1914.
Notes:
In 'The illustrated history of magic' magician Milbourne Christopher (1914-1984) described John Henry Anderson as 'the Barnum of nineteenth-century bafflers.' His 'street parades set a pattern for later circuses.' He 'plastered his gaudy showbills all over the world even on the sides of the pyramids in Egypt and on the cliffs of Niagara Falls in America.'
Anderson, known as the Wizard of the North, was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland in 1814 and died in 1874. A magician who used elaborate sets, he performed in Europe, the United States, Australia, and Hawaii. Strongly interested in the contributions of magicians who were important ancestor figures of his art, Houdini visited Anderson's grave in 1914. The site was badly neglected and Houdini undertook its restoration.
