Title: Happy Hooligan makes a grand hit! / F. Opper.
Creator(s): Opper, Frederick Burr, 1857-1937, artist
Date Created/Published: [19]11 June 18.
Summary: Thirteen-panel comic strip shows Happy Hooligan being asked to substitute for the lion tamer in the Jones Mammoth Circus. Happy dons a red coat and boots and enters the lion cage, but the enraged lion chases him out and he takes refuge in the ape's cage. He is not safe even there for the ape steals his new clothes, jumps on him, and kicks him out. Meanwhile a keeper admonishes the lion who meekly returns to his cage. The first panel shows an ape making Happy jump through a hoop. A sign reads 'Professor Monkerino the Great Man Tamer.' Frederick Opper first drew Happy Hooligan in 1900, and the strip continued for more than 30 years. Happy was a feckless Irish tramp with a tin can for hat. In most strips he got into trouble while trying to help others.
Notes:
Strip is colored only enough to provide direction to the colorist at the newspaper.
