In 1853, Congress named the fortification for General Edmund Pendleton Gaines, a Revolutionary War commander who won lasting fame for his tenacious defense of Fort Erie. Fort Gaines was in active use during the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War, and later served in World Wars I and II.
