Forebodings,Senator William Lorimer,William Brown McKinley,Boies Penrose,c1912

Title: Forebodings
Creator(s): Kirby, Rollin, 1875-1952, artist
Date Created/Published: [1912?]
Summary: Cartoon shows a group of Republican politicians gazing apprehensively at a sign on the wall reading 'Nov. 6.' They include Senator William Lorimer of Pennsylvania, Congressman William Brown McKinley of Illinois, Senator Boies Penrose of Pennsylvania, and New York State Republican Chairman William Barnes, Jr. A fifth man, labeled 'Murphy,' is unidentified. The cartoon was probably drawn in 1912, a disastrous year for the Republicans. A split in the party allowed the election of Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat, as president. The politicians shown also suffered personal defeats: Lorimer (shown in battered condition with a halo attached to his hat) who was known for his exemplary personal conduct, had his Senate election invalidated on the grounds of corruption. McKinley lost his seat in the congressional election. Penrose, head of the Republican party in Pennsylvania, was briefly ousted. Barnes, head of the New York State Republican organization was cited by a committee investigating vice.
