Title: Feb. 22, 1917
Creator(s): Pease, Lute, 1869-1963, artist
Date Created/Published: 1917 Feb. 22.
Summary: Cartoon shows the massive figure of George Washington, displaying his beliefs about patriotism and war (including the phrase: '...if we desire to secure peace, we must be prepared for war') carved on stone. Below him a small figure leads a peace march of '100 Pacifist Delegates to Washington,' saying 'My friends, that militarist jingo is 'way out of date.' Drawn to commemorate George Washington's birthday, the cartoon condemns the pacifists who mounted a new campaign to keep the United States out of World War I after Germany announced the resumption of unlimited submarine warfare in February 1917.
