Summary: Photograph from the main eastern theater of the war, Gettysburg, June-July, 1863. The Gettysburg campaign began in Virginia. Lee's army was moving north. Hooker's Union army kept pace with Lee, maintaining a position between the Confederates and Washington. The cavalrymen in this photograph were part of the Union force. The campaign reached its climax with the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3.
