Title: Elmscourt, Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi
Creator(s): Johnston, Frances Benjamin, 1864-1952, photographer
Date Created/Published: 1938.
Notes:
Title from photographer's inventory.
Home of the McKittrick family. Central portion of the house built in 1810 by Lewis Adams. Enlarged and remodeled by Ayres P. Merrill, U.S. Minister to Belgium under Pres. Grant. Galleries of lacy iron work said to have been brought from Belgium.
Building/structure dates: 1810.
Corresponding Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South neg. no. 1033. Library has no record of having this neg.
From verso: Notable in its Ironwork. Notable for its use of ironwork is Elmscourt. The cast iron patterns that cover both galleries in elaborate tracery are reminiscent of New Orleans' Vieux Carre, the old French section, and its garden district. Note the fine effect of the iron design against the sky. The thick growth of vines adds further beauty to the ironwork of the porch.
