Edward H. Harriman as a pirate,1906,pistol,sword,Frank Nankivell,Corruption

Title: [Edward H. Harriman as a pirate]
Creator(s): Nankivell, Frank A. (Frank Arthur), 1869-1959, artist
Date Created/Published: 1906 Dec. 12 [publication date]
Summary: A full-length caricature of Edward Henry Harriman as a pirate, brandishing a pistol and a sword.
Notes:
In the publication, the drawing accompanies a facetiously written poem entitled, 'It's a Shame to Tease Him,' in which the voice of Harriman asserts that he does not control the railroads, and furthermore, that he does not believe that anyone individual should possess that much power, explaining that the temptation to use it for corrupt purposes would be far too compelling.

Railroad magnate Edward Henry Harriman was an acknowledged genius in the building and administration of the railway system. In 1906 the Harriman holdings came under investigation by the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) in light of alleged government and public concerns over combinations and monopolies, business practices deemed contrary to the public interest. Although no substantial grounds for prosecution were uncovered, it was the public's opinion that Harriman represented all exploitive business practices. Nankivell published his image in the same year as the ICC investigation.
