Title: [Cockfight] / Lute Pease.
Creator(s): Pease, Lute, 1869-1963, artist
Date Created/Published: [1923]
Summary: Cartoon shows two men, one wearing a cloth cap, labeled 'Jitneys,' the other wearing a high silk hat labeled 'Trolley Company,' anxiously watching a cockfight. The Jitney's cock has the body of a small bus, labeled '5 Cent Fare'; the other cock has the body of a trolley car, labeled 'Any Old Fare.' In July 1923, the Jitney Bus Drivers Association of Essex, Hudson and Union Counties, New Jersey, offered to settle the strike of the employees of the Public Service Railway Company, by taking over the car tracks and substituting their buses with a 5 cent fare. Jitneys were small buses, frequently privately owned, that competed with the trolley company. To the disappointment of the jitney owners, the trolley company subsequently settled the strike with its employees.
